Paul A. Manikowski

My father, Paul A. Manikowski, was born December 9, 1941 two days after Pearl Harbor. He grew up on Detroit's east side in the area known as Poletown. My dad served as an Army Medical Corspman in Vietnam. After his tour of duty he married and raised three daughtes who then gave him seven grandchildren. He taught them thru example how to be hardworkers, the importance of service to others and to always be themselves. My dad was involved in The American Legion, Veterns of Foreign War, Knights of Columbus, Good Fellows, as well as organize book drives to the Ann Arbor VA Hospital and spoke at many schools about the importance of keeping our U.S. history in our schools textbooks. My father passed away January 15, 2008 of Lymphoma, a service-related disease that is believed was caused from the Agent Orange that was sprayed while he served in Vietnam in the United States Army.

I learned of the many lives that my father influenced at his funeral and still to this day. In honor of my father, my family, my mom and two sisters along with friends, and I, will be hosting our first benefit to keep my father's spirit of helping alive. We chose The Leukemia & Lymphoma society because of the rare way that my father's cancer presented itself.

Our mission is to help keep any other family from experiencing the grief we have as well as help veteran comrades of my fathers that are suffering in large numbers from the same disease by helping to provide hope and the funds necessary to develop an understanding, prevention and eventually a cure for all blood cancers such as lymphoma.
